Design Typology & intent

The Linear House is designed as a modern, climate-responsive home that maximizes light, ventilation, and spatial continuity within a narrow plot. Linear planning, open decks, and layered volumes create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, expressed through clean geometry and natural textures.

Project Description

The Linear House is a contemporary residence designed on a narrow rectangular plot with its shorter edge facing the road on the south. True to its name, the house follows a linear architectural concept — spaces are arranged sequentially from front to back, allowing each area to flow naturally while maintaining visual and functional continuity.

Planning & Spatial Organization

The ground floor is planned with a clear zoning hierarchy — public spaces in the front and private zones towards the rear. The foyer and living room open directly from the verandah, creating a warm transition from exterior to interior. The dining and kitchen occupy the central spine, connected through indoor decks and a lift core that forms the vertical circulation anchor. The master bedroom is positioned at the rear, opening into a private verandah and a sit-out garden, giving it both privacy and natural openness.

On the first floor, the layout continues this linear flow, with a family lounge at the front, a media room and secondary bedrooms in the middle, and another master suite with walk-in wardrobe and balcony at the rear. The three balconies and cutouts ensure every room connects with the outdoors.

Ventilation & Light

Cross-ventilation and natural lighting are key strengths of this design. The layout incorporates multiple open spaces — front verandah, indoor decks, outdoor decks, cutouts, and rear sit-outs — that act as breathing pockets. These voids ensure that air circulates freely across the length of the house, reducing dependency on artificial cooling. Large windows, sliding glass doors, and strategically placed balconies on both levels allow sunlight to filter in throughout the day, illuminating the interiors naturally.

Elevation & Architectural Expression

The elevation mirrors the linear planning through its strong horizontal lines and layered volumes. The interplay of planes — solid blocks juxtaposed with voids and terraces — gives the façade a rhythmic balance. The use of clean white walls, muted grey textures, and vertical stone cladding panels emphasizes modern minimalism while adding warmth through the natural tones of wood and green landscaping.

The landscaped setback and tall greenery soften the structure, blending it with its surroundings. The extended slabs and deep balconies not only add depth to the façade but also provide functional shading, enhancing the building’s thermal comfort.

Architectural Style

The house follows a modern minimalist architectural language — characterized by clean geometry, functional spaces, and an honest expression of materials. Every design move, from the open decks to the framed balconies, is deliberate — aimed at creating a calm, airy, and connected living experience
